Iga Swiatek was the absolute ruler of Roland Garros 2020, which allowed her to become the first Polish player to win a Grand Slam (also without giving up a single set). The 19-year-old from Poland earned a whopping 1760 points and made a leap of 37 places, hoisting herself to number 17 ahead of the season finale.
In the last 14 Slam tournaments, there are nine champions who had never won a major before. The male speech is quite different. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have won 14 of the last 15 Grand Slam titles, with the only exception being Dominic Thiem at the last US Open (where Federer and Nadal were absent).
In a recent interview, Swiatek admitted that women’s tennis cannot boast players of the same caliber as the Big 3.
Swiatek on the Big 3
“I know my game isn’t developed perfectly. I think the biggest change for me is going to be to be consistent, this is what women’s tennis is struggling with.
That’s why we have so many new grand slam winners because we are not as consistent as Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. That’s why my goal is going to be to be consistent. It’s going to be really hard to achieve that,” said Iga Swiatek.
In a recent interview, she revealed it as she said, “It was the semi-final of junior French Open in 2018. We had been preparing for this tournament for a long time. I wanted to win it, I feel my best on clay and the French Open has always been my favorite Grand Slam.
I played against Caty Mcnally, I had a match point and I lost”. The final feud against Sofia Kenin was the last hurdle she had to cross. Kenin was on her second Grand Slam final this year. Everyone anticipated a proper tussle for the trophy.
However, proving everyone wrong, Iga Swiatek continued her straight-set spree as she dominated the match to take the match 6-4, 6-1 to her name. The Polish star wants to win more Grand Slams in her career, and her next opportunity will be at the 2021 Australian Open.
It is a hard-court Major and while it may not be Swiatek’s favorite surface, fans all can expect her to build on her French Open win and do well there. The number 17 WTA revealed that she absolutely did not expect to win Roland Garros, as well as trusting that she was a fan of Rafael Nadal. The Spanish champion won his 13th Roland Garros equaling Roger Federer’s record of 20 Slam.
