George Clooney’s three-year-old son, Alexander, bowled into the room while the actor was being interviewed as GQ’s 2020 Icon of the Year.
Speaking about his life before he met his wife, the human rights activist and lawyer Amal, Clooney said he thought he was satisfied.
“I’m gonna work, I’ve got great friends, my life is full, I’m doing well,” he said of how he felt. “And I didn’t know how un-full it was until I met Amal. And then everything changed. And I was like, ‘Oh, actually, this has been a huge empty space.’”
The actor added that he had “never been in the position where someone else’s life was infinitely more important to me than my own. You know? And then tack on two more individuals, who are small and have to be fed…”
At which point his son Alexander walked into the room, prompting Clooney to say: “Oh, hey! Here’s Alexander. Here’s my son. Come here! Say hi! Say hello!”
He continued: “You’ve got chocolate on your face. Do you know that? What is that? Did you have chocolate?”
When Alexander confirmed that he had indeed eaten chocolate, Clooney joked: “How old are you now – 15?”
The toddler answered: “Three. Because I got my birthday.”
“I’ve slept on their couches when I was broke,” he said, revealing he wanted to repay them. “They loaned me money when I was broke. They helped me when I needed help over the years. And I’ve helped them over the years. We’re all good friends.
“And I thought, you know, without them I don’t have any of this. And we’re all really close, and I just thought basically if I get hit by a bus, they’re all in the will. So why the f*** am I waiting to get hit by a bus?”
Clooney can next be seen alongside Felicity Jones in the post-apocalyptic film The Midnight Sky, which arrives on Netflix on 23 December.
